Why Spanish in New York?
New York City is a perfect place to learn Spanish: throughout the city, you have a number of places where you can practice the language with native speakers from Spain, Central and South America. In New York, 46 percent of the city’s population speaks a language other than English at home. New York is the world's seventh most populous Spanish-speaking center, with more Spanish speakers than Quito, Ecuador, Asuncion, Paraguay or La Paz, Bolivia and almost as many as Havana, Cuba. At least a third of subway advertisements are in Spanish, and signs in hospitals and other public institutions are usually in both Spanish and English. In New York, you can also find a great number of Spanish and Latin Restaurants, and so many events such as concerts, exhibits and more where the Spanish language is spoken.

Other Spanish Language Facts
Spanish is the native language of more than 350 million people in 21 countries (Mexico, 109 million; Spain, 40 million; Argentina, 40 million; Colombia, 45 million...) and is spoken by at least 500 million people worldwide. Spanish is widely spoken in several other nations, including Canada, Morocco, the Philippines and the United States. This is even more compelling when you realize that about half of the population in the Western Hemisphere speaks Spanish, making it the primary language for as many people as English in this region of the world. Spanish is the second most used language in international communication and one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

In addition to its importance in the United States, Spanish is also gaining importance in Europe, where it is quickly becoming the foreign language of choice after English. By learning Spanish fluently, you can often understand enough Italian, French or Portuguese to get by in communicating with people who speak those languages. Spanish can open the door for you to many millions of other people who also speak one of these Romance languages.

In the United States, speaking Spanish is becoming very important due to the great increase of the Hispanic population over the past decade (a 60% Increase). At present, there are 35.5 million Hispanics, representing 12.5% of the total population; 2.8 million of them do not speak English at all. Hispanics are now the largest minority in the United States, and they are found especially in Florida (1.5 million), New York (1.8 million), Texas (3.4 million) and California (5.5 million). Besides the common use of Spanish in big cities throughout the United States, it is also important because of its wide use on radio and TV. Newscasts on the Spanish-language stations (Noticias Telemundo and Noticiero Univision), often have higher ratings than news shows on CBS, NBC and ABC. In addition, 5.8% of Internet users speak Spanish, making it the 4th most common language among the Internet community, after English, Japanese and German.

As a result of these demographic realities, residents of the United States have never before been more eager to learn another language. More and more native English speakers are making the move to learn another language because of globalization and the increasing importance of being able to commu- nicate with those from other countries. By far, studying Spanish in the United States is becoming not only popular and trendy but essential; people who were born and grew up in the United States are now leaning Spanish in record numbers.
